Course Objectives
- To analyze the historical and contemporary manifestations of racism and social injustice within mental health systems, including their impact on access to care, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes.
- To evaluate theories and frameworks of anti-racism and social justice, applying them to mental health contexts to identify and challenge systemic biases, discrimination, and disparities.
- To examine the intersectionality of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, socioeconomic status, and other social identities in shaping mental health experiences and disparities
- To develop strategies and interventions to promote culturally relevant trauma-informed mental health practices that prioritize equity, dignity, and respect for diversity.
- To explore the role of power dynamics, privilege, and oppression in mental health research, policy, and practice, while cultivating reflexivity and accountability as practitioners and advocates for social change.
- To encourage collaborative dialogue and action-oriented learning to address systemic barriers to mental health equity, advocate for policy reforms, and advance anti-racist practices within clinical settings, communities, and broader societal contexts.

Course Summary
In this course participants will analyze the historical and contemporary manifestations of racism and social injustice within mental health systems, including their impact on access to care, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes. As well as evaluate theories and frameworks of anti-racism and social justice, applying them to mental health contexts to identify and challenge systemic biases, discrimination, and disparities. Participants will explore the role of power dynamics, privilege, and oppression in mental health research, policy, and practice, while cultivating reflexivity and accountability as practitioners and advocates for social change.
Must pass at 80% or above on quiz for CEU credit.

Aissetu Barry Ibrahima, PhD., LMSW
- Aissetu Ibrahima, PhD., LMSW, is an Associate Professor and Director of the Master of Social Work Program at Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU). Aissetu is also Associate Director of the Center of Genocide and Human Rights Studies in Africa and the Diaspora. Her research focuses on Decolonization, Indigenous social work, community-based grassroots development, international health policies, and maternal health behavior and practices. She is involved in different Afro-centered programs that engage the African Diaspora, immigrants and refugees in the Chicago area. She is on the executive board of the African Diaspora Sixth Region Association of Illinois. She has published numerous articles and book chapters. She has also led various trainings and workshops on Decolonization, Indigenous methodologies, and Trauma Informed Care. Aissetu earned her PhD at University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), MSW at Addis Ababa University.
